Home-Made Jigsaw Puzzles – An Interactive Approach for Parents and Children

It is unquestionable that playing with kids jigsaw puzzles contributes to the mental development of each person, and thus to the overall wellbeing of everyone. But it cannot be avoided that there are just some people who cannot develop some liking to this type of game as they find this boring and tedious. This sounds frustrating for parents who believe in the potential of the game to improve special skills such as concentration and logic. However, parents need not to be discouraged as there are several ways to make your child engage in this activity.

Since children generally love to play and are relatively addicted to physical activities, they delight on the idea of having a playmate on any endeavor. They like to play with children of their age and adults alike, especially with their parents whom they often want to get some attention from. The participation of parents in any undertaking is very crucial in arousing their interest. Thus, interactive play between parents and children can also be effective in enkindling appreciation for educational puzzles .

While putting the pieces together is the heart of the game, making your own jigsaw puzzle also possesses some qualities that may develop interest on the part of your child. Aside from that, as a reverse of the whole process, puzzle making makes it even easier for your child to put up something which he or she has pulled apart.

Here are useful suggestions that you might want to incorporate in your interactive play.

  1. Choose a family picture or any familiar photograph that gives a family-oriented theme to make jigsaw puzzles . Children can easily relate to any situation that involves their family or friends. Given a picture of your house, it would be interesting for your child to identify a part of the swimming pool and find where the puzzle piece with his or her dog be placed. He or she would get funny ideas of locating the dog inside the pool or hanging in the gutter. You can also use pictures of his or her favorite cartoon characters.
  2. Allow your child to print the photo in his or her desired size and design. This adds a more personalized tone that will boost his or her level of confidence. Gaining self-esteem in the puzzle making process may increase the chances of your child participating in putting up the puzzle pieces together.
  3. After printing the photo, allow your child to draw lines as guide for cutting the pieces. Encourage him or her to use his or her favorite lines and figures and give compliments on how he or she can artistically draw. He or she can use objects that are not commonly used for jigsaw puzzles such as hearts and stars.
  4. Make your child do the cutting of the odd shapes. This process makes it even easier for your child to connect the puzzles together since he or she has done away from the regular cuts that confuse them. Remember that you are aiming to make them appreciate the game so there is no need to stick with what is conventional.
  5. Play with your child. Don't forget that the heart of this approach is interactive play and your participation will determine the end of your goals.
