One theme in jigsaw puzzles that can be very interesting to the boys is the combat scene in an actual amphibious landing by the US Marines and US Army soldiers; say the one on the beaches of Inchon, Korea directed by General Douglas McArthur in the 1950’s. One or two frames of the pictures showing amphibious landing vehicles and tanks rushing towards the beaches in the amphibious assault, and the overall scene on the beach of soldiers racing inland to avoid enemy defensive fires will surely occupy the tykes for hours in assembling the puzzle’s cut pieces.
You can imagine the concentration of the boys in sorting out the cleverly cut pieces of the military jigsaw puzzles and figuring out how each piece fits the next one to form the picture desired. Even Dad will be stopping his reading of the morning paper to help the kids search among the myriad jigsaw pieces of cardboard and giving them hints on this and that combination of the cut pieces. The scene on the beach is quite complicated and many factors come into play just trying to put the puzzle together.
The first picture for the assembly of the wood jigsaw puzzles may not be so difficult to form as the picture of General Douglas McArthur will dominate it and the boys will have quite an obvious base from which to build up the rest of the picture. The general with his famous corncob pipe and extra large dark sunglasses viewing the landing with naval field glasses will give the boys the hint on the main point to develop and build up the play jigsaw puzzle pieces.
The landing crafts rushing toward the beaches in the background of the general’s picture and the explosions in the water hit by enemy artillery fires will be relatively easy for the kids to visualize. The low flying aircraft supporting the landing with their rockets and bombs called for by the landing infantry soldiers will be another image to form in the skies above the battle scene.
The second picture frame that is the actual scene on the beach as the troops land under heavy enemy fire will be a bit more complicated as the scene will be cluttered with the dead and dying soldiers and the disabled tanks and other vehicles hit by the land mines the enemy prepared for them, buried under the sand. It will take some time to form the kidsjigsaw puzzles pieces into a comprehensive image of the very confused situation on the beach.
Mom’s using the amphibious landing wood puzzle will sure buy her time for some quiet in the house, even if Dad is not around to supervise the puzzle assembling of the boys. The difficulty in getting the amphibious beach picture’s formation will not discourage the boys to work on it longer and with more intensity. The theme of the beach battle scene is just too compelling for them to lose their interest in getting the whole puzzle into one big picture. |
